Jill Biden And Michelle Obama Could Help Bring Stability To Military Families

The First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden could help bring stability to the uncertain lives of military families.

Jill Biden, Michelle Obama, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis came to Columbus Thursday as part of a national tour to promote Joining Forces, a comprehensive, national initiative to support service members and their families in a variety of ways.

The event at the Sears Distribution Center in west Columbus focused on business' efforts to provide jobs for military families and veterans.

Sears Holdings, a corporate partner with Joining Forces, announced a new program called the Permanent Change of Duty Station (PCS) Promise last Tuesday. The program helps military spouses who work at Sears secure job transfers when the military relocates them.

Michelle Obama talked about the difficulties military spouses have in developing a career because of frequent moves with the more than 200 Sears associates in the crowd.

We see them trying to build seniority at a job, Obama said. They have to start over every time they have to move to a new duty station, with that comes a whole new job search and that's not easy.

Grant Curell, a third-year in computer science and engineering, is a cadet in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. Curell grew up in a military family and said the lifestyle can be hard on relationships.

There is a lot of uncertainty in our lives, Curell said. One of our primary concerns is jobs for spouses. Though Curell is not married, he and his girlfriend have had conversations about her career once he earns his commission as an officer.

It's especially hard for young families, Curell said. To have any certainty about anything would be great. It would help us a lot in terms of morale. In this economy, however, uncertainty has also spread to the civilian realm.

Despite some signs of economic recovery, 8.9 percent of Ohioans are unemployed, according an April 15 report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. A 2010 U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics report shows that unemployment is even more prevalent among recent military veterans.

The national civilian unemployment was at 9.4 percent while unemployment among veterans of the Global War on Terror was at 11.5 percent, According to the report.

There are employment resources available through the military, but they aren't really user-friendly, said Avi Zaffini, an OSU alumnus and Marine Corp Reservist who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I ended up just using regular resources like Google search and monster.com.

Avi Zaffini said finding employment is particularly difficult for guardsmen and reservists because they don't enjoy the same career resources as full-time active duty service members. It's kind of something that falls through the cracks.

After months of searching for work, Avi Zaffini found a job with the Ohio Secretary of State's office. It was stories like Zaffini's that inspired Joining Forces and companies like Sears to create special recruiting and employment services for military veterans.

Tom Aiello, Sears divisional vice president and U.S. Army veteran, said Sears employs more than 30,000 military veterans and offers unique services to guardsmen and reservists who are called to active duty.

When they get called up, we'll actually pay the difference between their military pay and what they were making at Sears and continue their benefits for their families, Aiello said. That means a lot, so they can worry about going over and doing their mission and coming home safe.

Aiello hopes Joining Forces and Sears will inspire other companies, both small and large, to take action to help veterans and military families.

Tom Aiello said. It really gives me great heart to see America rising to the challenge, to see my company reaching out to veterans and military families makes me very proud.Source URL: https://kmhighlights.blogspot.com/search/label/Michelle%20Obama

Sarah Palin Has Accused Michelle Obama Steals Her Daughter

Sarah Palin has accused Michelle Obama of stealing her teenage daughter!

The Alaskan politician is apparently furious that the First Lady asked Bristol, 20, to join her new public service council, the details of which have not been disclosed.

According to American tabloid the National Enquirer:

Michelle Obama stole my daughter! That was Sarah Palin's bitter complaint after her daughter Bristol agreed to work with Sarah’s sworn enemy, the First Lady.

Michelle Obama, 47, has signed up teen anti-pregnancy advocate Bristol Palin to join her new public service council, the details of which have not been disclosed.

The partnership is shocking, considering Sarah, 47, has repeatedly blasted Michelle.

On her Twitter page, Bristol, 20, admitted her mother’s disapproval of her decision to link up with Michelle, saying: “I’ll actually be in DC this week. First Lady has invited me to be part of council she’s creating.

    Mom Not happy, oh well.

Sarah recently fired back after getting heat from animal rights activists after shooting a caribou on Sarah Palin’s Alaska.

Palin said, We eat, therefore we hunt, and I am thankful that I get to feed my kids organic food.

If they don’t wear leather shoes and a belt and drive a car with leather seats and they eat no meat, then they have somethin’ to say. And I can listen to them when they say, ‘How dare you kill an animal to feed a family?’ because they don’t participate in that. And at least they’re sincere about it.

I’d say 99% of the critics, you know, they’re wearin’ their leather belts and they’re eatin’ their hamburgers somewhere, and they’re gonna tell me that it’s immoral or not the right thing to do to go out there and actually harvest that resource.Source URL: https://kmhighlights.blogspot.com/search/label/Michelle%20Obama

Michelle Obama Spearheads U.S. Push- Against Childhood Obesity

First Lady_ Michelle Obama- launched a major push against childhood obesity, which affects around 1 in 3 U.S. children and threatens to make the current generation of Americans the first to live shorter lives- than their parents.

President Barack Obama signed an executive memorandum setting up a task force on obesity headed- by the First Lady.

The memorandum said, my administration is committed to redoubling our efforts to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation through a comprehensive approach that builds on effective strategies, engages families and communities, and mobilizes both public and private sector resources.

I am so proud of the work that the First Lady, along with the cabinet secretaries behind me have done in trying to tackle one of the most urgent health issues that we have in this country, Obama said as he signed the memorandum, his wife's hand on his arm and the secretaries of health, education, agriculture and the interior looking on.

Because of obesity and the illnesses associated with it, including diabetes, heart disease and some cancers, doctors have warned that the current generation of U.S. children could be the first to live shorter, less healthy lives than their parents.

Nearly one in five U.S. kids aged 6 to 19 are obese and one in three is overweight.

Even babies are not immune to the scourge, with some 10% classified as obese.

The childhood obesity rate tripled in the United States between 1980-1999, creating an epidemic blamed on lack of exercise, a poor diet that's heavy on fat and sugar and not enough fresh vegetables and fruits.

A study released last year showed- the swelling obesity rate in the United States has also seen medical costs associated with excessive weight balloon from around 78 billion dollars a year in 1998 to around 147 billion dollars annually in 2006.

We must act now to improve the health of our nation's children and avoid spending billions of dollars treating preventable disease, said the memorandum signed by Obama.

At the first ever major meeting on obesity in the United States, childhood obesity was described as the country's worst health crisis, and parents were urged to ban television in kids' rooms as a first step to making sure children got out and exercised, last year.

Lawmakers have been encouraged to slap a tax on sugary drinks to combat obesity, and several schools have banned junk food from vending machines and even chocolate milk from the canteen in an effort to fight the fat.

Michelle Obama said in a television interview, We want to eliminate this problem of childhood obesity in a generation.

She has highlighted healthy living by planting a vegetable garden on the lawn of the white and joining in physical activities- including showing off impressive hula hooping skills- with U.S. schoolchildren.

Michelle Obama said, We're launching a nationwide campaign called 'Let's Move', adding that the importance of physical activity is something she stresses with her own young daughters, Malia and Sasha.

She said, my kids have to get up and move. They can't sit in front of the TV. I have my girls involved in sports because I want them as young women to understand what it feels like to compete and to win and to run and to sweat.
